Thyroid tumor resection

It is a surgical procedure in which part or all of the thyroid gland is removed to treat benign or cancerous tumors, or when there is an enlargement that causes breathing or swallowing problems.

Types of Thyroidectomy:

1. Partial Thyroidectomy
✓ Only part of the gland is removed.
✓ Used for benign tumors or non-cancerous thyroid nodules.
✓ The gland may continue to function normally after surgery.

2. Subtotal Thyroidectomy
✓ A small portion of the gland is left behind to preserve some hormonal function.
✓ Used for some cases of hyperthyroidism or severe enlargement.

3. Total Thyroidectomy
✓ The entire gland is removed.
✓ Performed for cases of thyroid cancer or severe enlargement that causes breathing problems.
✓ Requires lifelong thyroid hormone replacement after surgery.

When is surgery needed?
✅ Presence of a cancerous tumor or suspected thyroid cancer.
✅ Enlargement of the gland that affects breathing or swallowing.
✅ Hyperthyroidism that does not respond to other treatments.
✅ Presence of suspicious nodules that cause symptoms or continue to grow.

Post-Surgery:
✔️ The patient may require hormone replacement therapy if the entire gland is removed.
✔️ In some cases of cancer, radioactive iodine treatment may be needed to eliminate any remaining cells.
✔️ Regular follow-up is necessary to ensure stable thyroid hormone levels.

The surgery is generally safe, and Dr. Mohamed Abdel Khalek determines the most appropriate solution based on each patient's condition.
