Breast reconstruction surgeries
These are surgical procedures that aim to reshape the breast after partial or total breast removal due to tumors, helping to restore a natural shape and improve self-confidence.
🔹 Types of Breast Reconstruction:
1️⃣ Reconstruction using silicone or saline (Breast Implants)
✔️ Silicone or saline implants are used to create the breast shape.
✔️ A popular option if the skin and muscle are sufficient to support the implant.
✔️ Requires several stages, especially if the skin is expanded before the implant.
2️⃣ Reconstruction using natural tissue (Flap Reconstruction)
✔️ Tissue is taken from the body (such as the abdomen, back, or thighs) to reshape the breast.
✔️ Includes types such as abdominal flap (DIEP flap) or back flap (Latissimus Dorsi flap).
✔️ Provides natural results but requires a longer recovery time.
3️⃣ Hybrid Reconstruction
✔️ Combines silicone implants and natural tissue for a more natural shape.
✔️ Suitable for cases requiring a combination of artificial support and living tissue.
🔹 When is the procedure performed?
✔️ Immediately after mastectomy (immediate reconstruction), or
✅ After a period of treatment (delayed reconstruction), especially if radiation therapy was involved.
🔹 Advantages:
✔️ Restores the natural shape of the breast.
✔️ Improves self-confidence and psychological comfort.
✔️ Ability to choose the appropriate size and shape.
🔹 Potential Risks:
⚠️ Complications such as infection or body rejection of the implants.
⚠️ Possible need for subsequent adjustments to achieve the ideal shape.
⚠️ Recovery period varies depending on the type of procedure.
The choice of procedure depends on the patient's condition and the recommendations of Dr. Mohamed Abdel Khalek
